For 5 global brands and a vehicle portfolio of 40+ models utilizing nearly 30 displays; brand differentiation was not only part of the ask it was paramount in GMs digital approach and user experience. Ensuring that your lower cost vehicles, your entry level technologically capable hardware doesn’t feel like an oversight or that the customer was left behind is very important.
I collaborated with engineering and design on the size and proportion of these displays. After leading the vision for the branded differentiation I led the design direction for these display themes as well as reviews and critiques for the UX team working on these displays. I was then responsible for taking this work to cross discipline teams and partners to present, review, showcase and often times sell and get approval for our studio direction and vision for the brand and vehicles.
I ensured the graphics were properly implemented into the design system. I led, reviewed and critiqued the typography and iconography development. I ensured ISO standards were met, safety and regulatory best practices as well as GM best practices. I also reviewed and critiqued the 3D development of assets in the interface particularly vehicle imagery and realtime assets. I also worked with software on almost a daily basis ensuring gaps were closed, issues were resolved and that our teams were working as closely as possible.
Framework + Wireframes
Early ideations for functionality led us on a path of personalization and configurability in the form of cards in both the instrument cluster and touchscreen. Reusable widgets components that could be leveraged in multiple zones and shared across the portfolio. We also explored drive mode and task specific instrument cluster layouts as well as gauge options for the driver.
Sketching + Theming
Following the vision guides from the creative direction GMC and Chevrolet had solid established paths to target. The team pushed the lane as wide as possible to ensure rocks were being uncovered to explore as many ideas as possible.
Refined Theme Designs
Early on there were going to be variants between cars/crossovers and trucks/suvs in the form of unique backgrounds and gauges. This was going to help articulate further character separation between the vehicles, more rugged capability versus more streamlined sport characteristics. Due to software complexity it was decided to pull back and narrow it to one thematic approach per brand keeping some gauge differentiation where applicable.
Sizzle Videos
Partnering with the VFX studio Territory gave us the advantage and capability to really help sell our designs to the next level, these sizzle videos were an amazingly effective communication tool to not only sell and approve our designs but also convey the feeling, mood and excitement the new thematic directions could portray to the customer.
